About
I went through six years of a financially devastating divorce some years ago that left me in huge credit card debt while becoming a single parent. I had a young child and a teenager preparing for college at the time, had health problems, and I had become buried in debt. I couldn’t find the information I needed to make a good decision, in spite of all my research.
I consulted with a number of attorneys about a possible bankruptcy. I was surprised at the different advice I received. I was also surprised that there were dead ends for some people. Because of my situation, I “fell between the cracks,” one or two of them said. Knowing what I know today, I am amazed at some of the bad advice I received from professionals in the debt assistance sector to help consumers! I did get some good advice, one in particular at the right time, which saved my house from foreclosure from an unscrupulous bank using deceptive practices. What an education that was!
Then began the madness. It felt like there was no end in sight. The phone calls and letters were stressful and humiliating, and at a time when I was trying to get on my feet and get on with life, when a positive attitude was necessary, they dampened my spirit and often made me feel it was hopeless to keep trying.
One of my biggest fears was the unknown. What would the creditors do to me? I read varying reports on the internet about that. Let me tell you, there is a lot of bad information out there! I think that was my biggest fear. I soon found out!
I was fortunate at that time to find a professional in the debt relief business that helped coach me as I went along. I don’t think I could have stayed the course without him, and perhaps might have made some really unwise decisions. I shudder to think where I might be today. While he essentially teaches debt negotiation, he also provides counseling. The education and particularly his counsel was invaluable, and I was better able to deal with the situation and the creditors. I had a complicated case and there were no easy or fast remedies. I wasn’t certain yet that negotiation was the right path for me, although I wasn’t yet able to do a bankruptcy either. With this debt counselor on-call, I was able to face it all with so much more confidence.
I waited it out, as I really had no choice. One of the credit card companies sued me (Discover Card, for the curious). Then a divorce lawyer sued me. He had not only double-billed me, but because of gross misrepresentation, he drove my costs up exponentially, so this unfair bill was quite high. His misrepresentation had already caused so much grief and heartache to me and my children, that bill was just the cherry on top!
Because of that experience, I saw what happens when a vindictive and tenacious creditor obtains a judgment. A sheriff’s deputy walked through my house with my young son sitting in his bedroom, while I was helpless to do anything.
Eventually, all the planning, research, education and homework paid off, and I was finally able to put the debt behind me. If I could do it, anyone can! But, because debt has become a big and profitable business to many companies, there are too many ways to make the wrong choice.
I hope that the information provided here helps you choose the right path. Feel free to contact me with questions you may have. I’m an avid researcher with a wealth of experience behind me as well as legal consult on hand, and I’ll do my best to help in any way I can.
I wish you an even head as you walk down the path of debt resolution. I know what it feels like to be in your shoes, and trust me, there is a light at the end of the tunnel Good luck!
